Finca el Origen Reserva Malbec is one of the two wines I mentioned in my opening post that motivated me to start this blog. I was at the store awhile back and read that this was rated as one of the top 100 wines from Wine Enthuiast. I thought to myself, “there is no way that a $10 bottle of wine at a local grocery store would be that good.” I am man enough to admit that I was totally wrong with that statement.
Name: Finca el Origen Reserva Malbec
Vintage: 2010
Region: Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina
Alcohol by Vol.: 14%
Price: $10
(Price can vary on state, taxes, the store’s mark-up, number of friends you have on Facebook, and the outcome of your 20 sided die.)
I always get a prominent plum smell from this wine. It’s very floral and has a nice spice to the aroma. There could be some berry coming out of it, but I have a hard time picking it up on each smell. It possesses a dark purple which does not let light through on a full glass and great clarity.
Tasting immediately confirms the plum and spice, but I still cannot pick out the berry that I thought I smelled. This is a big, earthy wine with wonderful tannins. It starts warm and ends that way in the mouth. It leaves a nice, spicy aftertaste that is not overpowering. I have had this wine with rib-eyes, brisket, pork loin, and popcorn made with red pepper flake oil. It paired well in each instance.
Rating = Enjoy again!
This is one of my favorite wines of all time. It’s a wine that you can enjoy on your own and take home to meet your mother. There is an almost overwhelming pull every time I am in the store to just skip all the other wine and pick up a couple bottles of this gorgeous Malbec. I think that you need to stop reading my blog and go get a bottle for yourself to discover the magic that is Finca el Origen Reserva Malbec. Seriously, go…now!
About Stuart Bankey
My name is Stuart and I live in San Antonio, TX. My love affair with wine started when I was in graduate school. I didn’t use loans to pay for school, so we had to be as frugal as possible. I also started to experiment with wine during this time. It took a little while, but I was able to pick out flavors in wine and started to realize that there were some good (and bad) wines that could be found for under $15 a bottle. I decided to start a blog to act as an outlet for my creative energies and talk about the wine that I have tried.
