The other day, I was in the store and decided that it would be a good night for a French wine. I looked around for awhile and finally chose one from Louis Jardot that I have seen many times but had never bothered to purchase. I also found out that it was a new varietal for me: Gamay.
Name: Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages
Winery: Louis Jadot
Alcohol by Vol.: 13%
(Price can vary on state, taxes, the store’s mark-up, and if you have ever rescued your wife from a giant lizard that has fallen asleep in your bed.)
I poured the dark burgundy wine and immediately got a very strong strawberry smell. I wasn’t even close to the glass and could pick out the smell instantly. I was hoping that more aromas would develop as I got my nose closer to the bowl, but I pretty much found that could be a strawberry wine by the time I had finished smelling. It was so strong that I couldn’t pick out other aromas.
I took a sip of the Louis Jardot and immediately quoted Kronk: “Woah…” This is was screaming out with strawberry and had confirmed what I was worried about when I finished smelling the pour. It has a sweet taste with no real complexity but it also had a rough texture in my mouth. Rough doesn’t mean gritty, like there were artifacts in the wine, but rather that it felt harsh in my mouth. It ended in a medium, unremarkable finish.
If I had to drink this bottle again, I would like to have had some roasted turkey with cranberry sauce or a roasted pork loin with a cherry roulade. I think the fruitiness of the other berries could cancel out the pure strawberry flavor of this wine, which could help in detecting other flavors.
Rating: Try Again
I wouldn’t mind trying this again with one of the meals mentioned above, but I don’t want to try this by itself again. I did more research into Gamay and found that the maceration process can result in adding “a bit of a strawberry” taste to this varietal. Either the author of that article is a master of understating reality, had weak taste buds, or the winery must have macerated the shit of out of their grapes to get this level of flavor. However, if you are a major strawberry lover, then I highly recommend that you purchase this wine.
